Day Skipper & International Certificate of Competence (ICC)

With the RYA Day Skipper certificate or an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) you will be qualified and ready to charter.

RYA Day Skipper Practical

day skipper iccDay Skipper Practical will teach you the skills required to safely skipper a small cruising yacht in familiar waters by day.

The syllabus includes pilotage, navigation, safety, seamanship and yacht handling under power and sail.

Shorebased theory

To ensure you have the necessary theory knowledge required to act safely as a skipper we recommend combining your Day Skipper Practical course with either;

Essential Navigation and Seamanship or Day Skipper Shorebased theory

International Certificate of Competence (ICC)

An ICC is needed for the inland waterways of Europe and for the coastal waters of most Mediterranean countries. As the holder of a Day Skipper certificate you are entitled to an ICC from the RYA.

If you do not hold an RYA Day Skipper Practical certificate but have the equivalent skills you can book to do an ICC test with Flying Fish in Cowes or Sydney.

  • Day Skipper Practical Weekend

    2 days
    Book these two days as a 'stand alone' to brush up your skills or as your first weekend of three if you want the RYA qualification.

  • Day Skipper Practical - 5 days

    5 days
    This live-aboard course leads to an RYA Day Skipper certificate which is internationally recognized for bare boat yacht charter . You will develop your yacht handling skills under power and sail, and improve your knowledge of navigation and seamanship with expert guidance from a friendly instructor.

  • Day Skipper Fast-track

    4 weeks
    From beginner to RYA qualified Day Skipper in just four weeks. Gain a package of internationally recognized qualifications whilst enjoying fantastic sailing on Sydney Harbour.

  • Day Skipper Shorebased Theory

    5 days
    The RYA Day Skipper Shore-based Theory week at Flying Fish is a comprehensive introduction to chart work, navigation, meteorology, collision regulations and the basics of seamanship. A valuable week in the classroom to complement the on-board training in our Competent Crew, Day Skipper Practical and Powerboat courses.

  • International Certificate of Competence (ICC)

    1 day
    As a skipper, you must make yourself aware of any qualifications required when visiting another country. In the countries of Europe the ICC will usually prove evidence of competence to the local authority or a charter company.
