RYA Day Skipper/Watchleader Theory
The RYA Dayskipper shore-based course provides a comprehensive introduction to chartwork, navigation, meteorology, safety, and seamanship and provides the underpinning theory knowledge essential for recreational skippers. It will help you make informed decisions on the water and feel confident about being in charge.
Description
Every skipper is responsible for the safety of their crew and must, therefore, understand the essentials of safety and good seamanship.
The RYA Day Skipper Shore-based course at Flying Fish is designed to complement the onboard training in our Competent Crew, Day Skipper Practical, and Powerboat courses.
The syllabus covers all the theory knowledge required by the recreational skipper.

- Ropes and their properties
- Anchor types
- Safety equipment and stowage
- Fire precautions, harnesses, and lifejackets
- Distress and rescue procedures
- International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea
- Charts, publications, the compass
- Buoyage, pilotage, lights
- Navigation and tides
- Meteorology/passage planning
- Restricted visibility
- The marine environment
Course details
The programme includes 40 hours of teaching plus exam time.
Location and instruction
The week is run in our comfortable, well-resourced waterside classroom at Middle Harbour Yacht Club by an experienced and certified RYA shore-based course instructor.

Before you start
- The course is suitable for beginners.
- It is recommended for anyone planning to be the skipper of a recreational power or sailing vessel up to 24 metres in length.
