STCW Basic Safety Training

STCW Basic Safety Training is required for anyone wishing to work on a commercial vessel greater than 24 m in length. If your aim is to work on superyachts this five day course is an essential part of your training.


Sea SurvivalFlying Fish is recognized by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Authority (MCA) to deliver STCW 2010 courses at our training centre in Cowes UK.

Superyacht Deck and Steward/ess Crew Training

These intensive courses are designed to give you all the certificates you need to launch a well paid career on superyachts in the Mediterranean or Caribbean.

STCW Basic Safety Training 

The Basic Safety week consists of five elements:

1. Personal Survival Techniques 

This module covers survival suits, hypothermia, life rafts, basic actions in emergency, etc. It includes a wet drill in the swimming pool where you practise the launch of a liferaft and associated survival skills.

2. Elementary First Aid

Basic, immediate, and emergency response to the most common shipboard injury emergencies, including CPR.

3. STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting

Types and classes of fires, prevention, hazard awareness, methods of fire extinguishment, structure of incident response team, appropriate equipment, personal safety, team support, and live exercises.

4. STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR)

Types of shipboard emergencies, alarms and signals, initial actions, personal/protective safety equipment, effects of pollution, pollution prevention, safe working practices, enclosed spaces, accident prevention, sexual harassment, individual rights, drug and alcohol awareness, and prevention of abuse.

5. STCW Proficiency in Security Awareness

Contributing to maritime security through heightened awareness, recognition of security threats, understanding the need for, and methods of maintaining, security awareness and vigilance.

Safety and emergency procedures

You will leave with a good understanding of safety and emergency procedures. You will be familiar with rescue and evacuation. You will have practised crisis scenarios, handled fire fighting equipment and launched a life raft. You will have a thorough understanding of how to perform as a professional mariner with an awareness of today's threats to security on board.

RYA Powerboat Level 2

If you are planning to work in the Superyacht Industry we recommend that you book RYA Powerboat Level 2 in addition to Basic Safety Training. 


The Flying Fish crew houses in Cowes are comfortable and centrally located. Just a 2 minute walk to the town and our training centre, this will take the stress out of finding your own accommodation.

A twin share room in our self-catering accommodation costs $425 for the duration of the course.

Before you start

There are no formal pre-course requirements.

You will get the most out of the course if you have previous sailing experience or intend to join a Competent Crew week.
