The Windsurf Instructor Fast-Track is a fun and intensive four-week course for windsurfers looking to turn their passion into a career. Based in Sydney’s beautiful Middle Harbour, the programme combines expert coaching, plenty of time on the water, and focused instructor training to take you from basic skills to a confident, qualified RYA Windsurf Instructor in just four weeks.
Description
To gain the RYA Start Windsurfing Instructor qualification, you need to demonstrate strong intermediate windsurfing skills, solid theory knowledge, good safety awareness, and an effective coaching style.
Our innovative programme is designed to rapidly develop your skills in a superb watersports environment. We include basic SUP training to build all-around water confidence and balance, which supports your windsurfing progression.
You’ll learn an imaginative approach to teaching safe, efficient windsurfing techniques, supported by the key theory behind the sport.
Course programme
Week 1 – WS Level 1 & 2 skills / First Aid
Week 2 – Intermediate windsurfing skills and teaching practice
Week 3 – Intermediate skills / RYA Powerboat Level 2
Week 4 – RYA Start Windsurfing Instructor
Location
The course takes place in a spectacular setting at Middle Harbour Yacht Club on Sydney Harbour, the heart of Australia’s sailing and watersports community.
The weather is typically warm, sunny, and breezy, and the sailing area is extensive with plenty of beautiful beaches just a short sail away.
Middle Harbour is the perfect playground for developing your windsurfing and teaching skills quickly while enjoying some of the best sailing conditions in the country.
Equipment and staff
We have a fleet of TAHE windsurf boards with a range of sail sizes, along with Highfield rigid inflatable rescue boats. You’ll also have access to paddleboards and a few wings for cross-training and skill development.
For shore-based training, we use a comfortable waterside classroom equipped with modern teaching aids and resources.
Our experienced instructors will guide you through the programme in the friendly, professional style that Flying Fish is known for.
Where to stay ashore
If you’re not based in Sydney, you’ll need accommodation for the duration of your course. Most of our international and interstate students stay in the beautiful beachside suburb of Manly.
We may have limited availability in Flying Fish serviced crew apartments in Manly, where you can stay with other Flying Fish students just steps from one of Australia’s most stunning beaches. Alternatively, you’re welcome to arrange your own accommodation nearby.

Before you start
- Our 4-week Fast-track course is ideal for those with some basic windsurfing experience.
- If you are starting as a beginner you may need to complete some extra weekend skills training whilst you are with us.
What next?
- On passing the RYA Start Windsurfing Instructor qualification you are ready to start work as a windsurf instructor.
- As an RYA instructor, you will be in demand for work, particularly during the Australian and Mediterranean summer seasons.

- Booking information
- To secure your place in the course, please pay a 20% holding deposit via the links provided above. This deposit will reserve your position until sixty days before the course start date, at which point the remaining course fees will be required.
- Please be aware that the deposit is non-refundable; however, it can be transferred to any other course or event offered by Flying Fish.
- We recommend booking early to avoid disappointment, as spaces are limited.

- What are the essential skills and knowledge required to join this course?
- You should be a competent windsurfer, confident in sailing in non-planing conditions, including tacking, gybing, sailing upwind and downwind.
- Ideally, you will hold the RYA Intermediate Non-Planing certificate or have equivalent experience.
- You should have some basic theory knowledge, such as wind awareness, board setup, and simple weather considerations.
- What equipment will I train on?
- You’ll use modern RYA-approved windsurfing boards and rigs suited for teaching beginners and improvers.
- The course covers using a range of beginner-friendly kit and provides tips on adapting for different wind and water conditions.
- How fit do I need to be?
- You’ll need a reasonable level of fitness and stamina to spend time on the water and demonstrate skills repeatedly.
- A positive attitude and willingness to learn and teach are just as important as physical ability.

- What happens if the weather is bad?
- We run the course in a range of wind and weather conditions, as it’s important to learn how to adapt your teaching approach.
- In the unlikely event of extreme weather where it’s unsafe to be on the water, theory sessions and shore-based teaching techniques will be covered instead.
- What should I bring with me?
- Wetsuit
- Rash vest, swimwear, and quick-dry clothing
- Old trainers or wetsuit boots for grip and protection on the board
- Hat, sunglasses with a strap, and high-factor sunscreen
- A towel and a warm change of clothes for after sessions
- Water bottle and lunch/snacks for the day
- A sense of enthusiasm, teamwork, and a willingness to learn new teaching skills!
- What job opportunities are there after becoming an RYA qualified Windsurf Instructor?
- Once qualified, you can work at watersports centres across the Mediterranean, the UK, and Australia, teaching windsurfing to beginners and improvers.
- Many instructors combine their qualifications with travel, working seasonal jobs at resorts, holiday companies, and beach clubs.
- It also makes sense to add an RYA Dinghy Sailing Instructor qualification, as this broadens your employability and allows you to teach a wider range of activities at most centres.
