Yachtmaster Practical Skills
This course is for anyone at, or above, RYA Day Skipper standard who wants to develop their boat handling, seamanship and navigation skills and their confidence as a skipper.
The course focuses on the practical skills that will be tested in a Yachtmaster examination.
This is not an offshore passage making week and therefore doesn't include any Yachtmaster qualifying passages.

During the week you will practice boat handling under power and sail, drill safety and emergency procedures and execute pilotage and navigation exercises by day and night.
We will use a variety of coaching techniques to make sure you get plenty of time to develop the skills expected of a Yachtmaster.
Training runs from 10 am to 5 pm each day. There will also be two night training exercises. See draft schedule below.

- Wed - YM boat handling skills / night exercise
- Thu - YM pilotage and navigation exercises
- Fri - YM pilotage and navigation exercises
This course is a companion week to the Yachtmaster Shorebased Theory course which covers all the theory knowledge required at this level.
Location and sailing conditions
The course is based in Sydney Harbour although you are likely to venture a little way offshore for various drills
The yacht and the instructor
This course will be run on board one of our Beneteau 40.7 cruiser racer yachts by an accredited RYA/AS Instructor.

This is a non live-aboard training week.
For those who need it we can provide shared cabin accommodation on board for 4 nights.
Tuition, life-jackets and safety harnesses are provided. We can loan you wet weather clothing if required.
Bring your own lunch.
Flying Fish provide evening meals before the two night training exercises.

Before you start
You hold the RYA Day Skipper practical certificate or have equivalent experience.
You are a competent navigator, probably having attended the Day Skipper Shorebased Theory course.
The RYA Cruising Instructor course is a requirement for commercial Yachtmasters to teach RYA courses up to Day Skipper level. Qualified instructors are in demand for work at RYA approved schools in Australia, the UK, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.
Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR) is a compulsory online course for qualified RYA Yachtmasters who require a Commercial Endorsement. Ignore the dates shown here!
Our Yachtmaster Milebuilders provide the opportunity to log sea miles and qualifying passages in preparation for assessment for the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate. You will take part in a series of extended passages by day and night, operating a watch system on board.
On completing this course you will have a thorough knowledge of all the theory required for the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence.
This live-aboard course leads to a practical assessment, conducted independently by an RYA Yachtmaster Examiner. Depending on your prior skills and experience your objective may be a Yachtmaster Offshore or Coastal Certificate of Competence.
