Flying Fish Alumni to Lead Crew in the 2025 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race
Two alumni from Flying Fish Sydney have been selected for senior leadership roles in the prestigious 2025 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race — with one appointed Skipper and the other First Mate.
It’s a proud moment for Flying Fish and a reflection of the quality of our internationally recognised RYA Yachtmaster training programmes.
Oliver Irvine & Otto Kulo
Oliver Irvine, a former Flying Fish Yachtmaster Instructor, has been selected to skipper one of the eleven Clipper 70 ocean racing yachts.
Joining him as First Mate is Otto Kulo, a graduate of the Flying Fish Yachtmaster Fast Track programme in Sydney.
Together, Olly and Otto represent the professionalism, resilience, leadership, and offshore seamanship developed through years of training and real-world sailing experience.
One of the World’s Toughest Offshore Races
The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race covers more than 40,000 nautical miles, crossing six continents and some of the toughest oceans on the planet.
Over nearly a year at sea, crews face powerful Southern Ocean systems, long offshore passages, sleep deprivation, and relentless teamwork challenges.
It is widely regarded as one of the ultimate tests of endurance, seamanship, and leadership.
From Sydney Harbour to the World Stage
“We’re incredibly proud of both Olly and Otto,” said Andy Fairclough, Director of Flying Fish.
“To see a former instructor and former student take leadership roles in one of the world’s most iconic offshore races is a fantastic reflection of the quality of training and mentoring at Flying Fish.”
Based at Middle Harbour Yacht Club in Sydney, Flying Fish has trained professional Yachtmasters, offshore sailors, instructors, and adventurers for more than 30 years.
