The course teaches you to skipper a yacht on coastal passages by day and night, building confidence beyond familiar waters.
Training focuses on navigation, pilotage, watchkeeping, boat handling, passage planning, meteorology, COLREGS, and emergency procedures in an offshore environment.
The RYA Coastal Skipper Practical is the core qualification at this level. The Yachtmaster Shorebased Theory course is strongly recommended to support offshore navigation and progression towards Yachtmaster.
Yacht skippers responsible for coastal passages are strongly advised to complete Marine First Aid, Safety and Sea Survival, and Marine Radio Operation, all of which are mandatory for professional Yachtmasters.
The RYA Coastal Skipper Practical course is ideal for confident Day Skippers or sailors with equivalent experience looking to take the next step into offshore sailing. This five-day program focuses on advancing seamanship, navigation, and boat handling skills, with an emphasis on operating safely and effectively in more challenging coastal and offshore conditions.

Either before or after your RYA Coastal Skipper course, you should complete the Yachtmaster Shore-based Theory course, which we run over an intensive week in the classroom.
With both RYA Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Shorebased certifications completed you’re ready to build offshore sea time and watch leader experience before progressing to RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore certification.
Our Yachtmaster Milebuilder courses are a popular way to gain offshore sea time and complete the qualifying passages required for the Yachtmaster examination.
NB – Completing the RYA Coastal Skipper course reduces the sea time requirement for the Yachtmaster Coastal examination from 800 to 400 miles.
