This course meets the requirements of the World Sailing (ISAF) Special Regulations, Appendix G, Part D for Offshore Personal Survival refresher training.

This practical half-day revalidation course refreshes the essential offshore safety and survival skills required for offshore sailing and racing, with a strong focus on liferaft procedures, in-water survival techniques, recovery drills, and modern safety equipment.

Course schedule

  • Liferaft deployment and practical pool exercises
  • Righting and boarding an upturned liferaft
  • Lifejacket inflation and in-water survival drills
  • Recovery exercises using throwing lines and drogues
  • Modern offshore safety equipment familiarisation
  • Search and rescue procedures and communications equipment

Instructors and equipment

The course is delivered by an Australian Sailing / World Sailing accredited instructor.

All training and safety equipment is provided by Flying Fish.

Location

Practical training and pool exercises take place at the Warringah Aquatic Centre in Frenchs Forest.

Before you start

  • You have already completed a full AS or RYA / ISAF Offshore Safety and Survival course but your certificate is about to expire or has recently expired.
  • NB - if your certificate is out of date by more than 24 months you will need to complete the full two-day course again.

  • What does the course involve?
    • This practical revalidation course focuses on liferaft deployment, pool exercises, and offshore survival techniques.
    • You will practise righting and boarding an upturned liferaft, lifejacket inflation, in-water survival techniques, and recovery exercises using throwing lines and drogues.
    • The course also includes familiarisation with modern offshore safety equipment including EPIRBs, PLBs, Life Cells, immersion suits, and AIS devices.
  • Do I need previous sailing experience?
    • Yes. This course is for sailors who have previously completed the full AS/World Sailing Offshore Safety and Sea Survival course.
    • If you have not completed the full course before, you will need to enrol in the full Offshore Safety and Sea Survival course instead.
  • My certificate expired more than two years ago. Can I still do the revalidation course?
    • No. If your Offshore Safety and Sea Survival certificate is more than two years out of date, you will need to complete the full course again.
  • I would like to refresh the flare drills and theory sessions as well. Should I do the full course instead?
    • Yes. If you would like a more comprehensive refresher covering flare drills, theory, communications equipment, and broader offshore safety training, we recommend booking the full Offshore Safety and Sea Survival course.
  • Can I book this as a private course for my crew?
    • Yes. If you have a group of eight or more people, we can arrange a private course date to suit your crew.
    • Private group bookings receive a 10% discount per person.

  • Where is the course held?
    • The practical training and pool exercises take place at the Warringah Aquatic Centre in Frenchs Forest.
    • Full joining instructions and timings will be provided after booking.
  • What should I bring with me?
    • Swimwear and towel for pool exercises.
    • Comfortable clothing and non-slip shoes.
    • Change of clothes for after the pool session.
    • All safety equipment required for the course is provided by Flying Fish.
    • A positive attitude and willingness to get involved!
  • What qualification will I receive?
    • On successful completion, you will receive the Australian Sailing / World Sailing Offshore Safety & Sea Survival certificate.
    • This certification is recognised for many offshore racing events and professional sailing pathways.
  • How long is the certificate valid for?
    • The certificate is generally valid for five years.
    • You can renew your certification by completing another revalidation course, provided your certificate has not expired for more than two years.
